The Best Free Tools to Check Your Computer's Health in 2026

March 2026·7 min read

You do not need to pay an IT technician to find out what is wrong with your computer. These tools will tell you everything you need to know — and most of them are completely free.

Built-in tools you already have

Both Windows and Mac have useful built-in tools. Windows Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc shows CPU, RAM, disk and network usage in real time. Resource Monitor gives more detail. Mac Activity Monitor does the same. Windows also has built-in Memory Diagnostic, Disk Check, and System File Checker — all free and built in.

Speccy — hardware overview (Windows)

Speccy by Piriform (free) gives you a clear overview of all your hardware components — processor, motherboard, RAM, graphics, storage and audio. It also shows real-time temperatures. Useful for knowing exactly what is inside your computer before buying upgrades or describing your system to a repair shop.

CrystalDiskInfo — hard drive health (Windows)

CrystalDiskInfo reads the SMART data that every modern hard drive and SSD records about its own health. It shows drive temperature, error rates, reallocated sectors (bad areas of the disk) and an overall health status. Essential for checking whether a drive is beginning to fail before it takes your data with it.

Malwarebytes — security check (Windows and Mac)

The free version of Malwarebytes is one of the most effective malware scanners available. It finds threats that many paid antivirus programmes miss, particularly adware and potentially unwanted programmes. Run it as a second opinion alongside Windows Defender — they work well together.

Cerebro Scan — everything in one place

For a complete health check without needing to know which tools to download or how to interpret technical data, Cerebro Scan on a USB stick gives you all 17 diagnostic categories in one dashboard with plain English explanations. Plug in, run it, and get a clear summary of everything — no installation required on any Mac or Windows PC.
