How to Make Your Laptop Battery Last Longer
Most laptop batteries lose capacity much faster than they should. These habits and settings will help your battery last longer every charge and stay healthy for years.
How lithium batteries age
Laptop batteries use lithium-ion chemistry. Each time you charge and discharge the battery, it goes through a charge cycle. Most laptop batteries are rated for 300 to 1000 charge cycles before capacity drops to around 80% of original. How you charge and store the battery significantly affects how quickly this happens.
The charging sweet spot
Lithium batteries last longest when kept between 20% and 80% charge. Charging to 100% and keeping it there all day accelerates degradation. Many modern laptops have a battery health mode or optimised charging setting — on Mac it is in System Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Enable it if your laptop has this option.
Heat is the biggest enemy
High temperatures accelerate battery degradation more than anything else. Avoid using your laptop on soft surfaces such as beds and sofas that block ventilation. Do not leave it in a hot car. If your laptop gets hot during use, consider a laptop stand that improves airflow. The difference in battery longevity over time is significant.
Settings that extend daily battery life
Reduce screen brightness — the display is the biggest power consumer. Enable battery saver mode when unplugged. Disable WiFi and Bluetooth when not needed. Close applications you are not using. On Windows, go to Settings > System > Power and Battery for specific recommendations. On Mac, these settings are in System Settings > Battery.
Knowing when to replace
A battery showing less than 70% of its original capacity is worth replacing. On Mac, hold Option and click the battery icon to see battery condition. On Windows, type "powercfg /batteryreport" in Command Prompt for a full battery health report. Cerebro Scan shows battery capacity and health status directly on its Battery tab.
