Laptop vs Desktop — Which Should You Buy?

January 2026·5 min read

Laptop or desktop — it is one of the most common tech decisions and the right answer depends entirely on how you use your computer. Here is a straightforward guide.

The case for a laptop

Laptops offer portability that desktops simply cannot match. If you work from multiple locations, take your computer to meetings, travel, or use it in different rooms at home, a laptop is the obvious choice. Modern laptops are powerful enough for almost all everyday tasks, and the gap between laptop and desktop performance has narrowed significantly in recent years.

The case for a desktop

Desktops offer more performance per pound, are easier and cheaper to repair and upgrade, have better thermal management (more room for cooling), and typically last longer. For a fixed work location, a desktop with a good monitor and keyboard is more comfortable for extended use. The same budget buys significantly more power in a desktop than a laptop.

Performance differences in practice

For everyday tasks — web browsing, email, documents, video calls — modern laptops are perfectly capable. The difference becomes noticeable for demanding work: video editing, gaming, 3D rendering, and running multiple virtual machines all benefit significantly from desktop hardware. Apple Silicon MacBooks have narrowed this gap considerably for creative work.

Cost comparison

For the same budget, a desktop will have better specifications than a laptop. A £600 desktop will typically have faster processing, more storage, and better graphics than a £600 laptop. However, a desktop requires a separate monitor (add £100-200), keyboard, and mouse. Once you factor these in, the cost difference is smaller than it first appears.

Which should you choose?

Choose a laptop if: you move around frequently, you need to work away from home, space is limited. Choose a desktop if: you work from one location, you need maximum performance for your budget, you do demanding tasks like video editing or gaming. If you are genuinely unsure, a mid-range laptop covers most needs and the portability is there when you need it.
