Why Does My Computer Crash Randomly? 8 Common Causes

March 2026·6 min read

A computer that crashes randomly is one of the most frustrating experiences in computing. The good news is that crashes almost always have a specific cause — and most of them are diagnosable.

Overheating — the most common cause

When a CPU or GPU gets too hot, the computer shuts down immediately to prevent permanent damage. This is often the cause of crashes that happen during demanding tasks but not during light use. If your computer crashes while gaming or during large file transfers but is fine otherwise, overheating is the prime suspect.

Failing RAM

RAM errors cause some of the most unpredictable crashes, often with different error messages each time. Windows has a built-in Memory Diagnostic tool — search for it in the Start menu — that can test your RAM. If errors are found, replacing the RAM stick is the fix, and RAM is relatively inexpensive.

Failing storage drive

A drive that is starting to fail can cause crashes when the operating system tries to read from a damaged sector. Signs include crashes accompanied by unusual sounds, very slow boot times, and files that randomly become corrupted. Running SMART diagnostics — which Cerebro Scan can do — gives you early warning before complete failure.

Driver conflicts and corrupt system files

Outdated or corrupted device drivers are a common cause of blue screens on Windows. The error code on a blue screen tells you which driver is responsible. Running "sfc /scannow" in Command Prompt as administrator will scan and repair corrupted Windows system files.

Software conflicts

Newly installed software can conflict with existing applications or system components. If crashes started after installing something specific, try uninstalling it. System Restore on Windows or Time Machine on Mac can revert your system to a working state before the problem started.
