What Do Computer Specs Actually Mean? GHz, GB, RAM and More Explained
Computer specifications are written in a language that seems designed to confuse. Here is a plain English explanation of what each number and abbreviation actually means for how your computer performs.
Processor speed — what GHz means
GHz (gigahertz) measures how many operations per second your processor can perform. Higher is generally faster, but the number of cores matters just as much. A quad-core processor can handle four tasks simultaneously. For everyday use in 2026, four cores at 3 GHz or above is comfortable for most tasks.
RAM — why GB matters so much
RAM (Random Access Memory) is your computer's short-term working memory. Every open application uses some RAM. When RAM is full, your computer starts using your much slower storage drive as overflow — which causes dramatic slowdowns. 8GB is the minimum comfortable amount today, 16GB is recommended, and 32GB suits demanding tasks like video editing.
Storage — SSD versus HDD and how much you need
Storage capacity is measured in GB or TB. A typical Windows installation takes around 100-150GB. For most people, 500GB to 1TB is sufficient. More important than capacity is the type: SSDs are 10-100 times faster than HDDs for everyday tasks. Always choose an SSD if given the option.
Graphics card — GPU and VRAM explained
The GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) handles everything you see on screen. For general use and office work, integrated graphics built into the CPU is perfectly adequate. For gaming, video editing or 3D work, a dedicated GPU with its own VRAM (video RAM) is necessary. 6-8GB VRAM suits most gaming needs.
What specs matter most for different uses
For office work and web browsing: processor speed and RAM matter most. For gaming: GPU and CPU are equally important. For video editing: RAM, fast storage and GPU all contribute. For basic home use, almost any modern computer is adequate — do not overspend on specifications you will never use.
