What Is RAM and How Much Do You Need in 2026?
RAM gets mentioned constantly when people talk about computers — but many people are not sure what it actually does. Here is the plain English explanation and a clear answer to how much you need.
What RAM actually is
RAM stands for Random Access Memory. Think of it as your computer's short-term working memory — it holds everything your computer is actively working with right now. Every open application, every browser tab, every file you have open is stored in RAM so your processor can access it instantly without having to read from the much slower storage drive.
What happens when RAM is full
When all your RAM is in use, your computer does not crash — it starts using your storage drive as overflow memory, a process called paging or virtual memory. The problem is that storage drives are dramatically slower than RAM. Reading from an SSD takes around 100 microseconds; reading from RAM takes around 0.1 microseconds. The slowdown is immediate and severe.
How much RAM do you actually need?
4GB: barely usable in 2026 — fine for very basic tasks only. 8GB: acceptable for light use, but you will feel the limits quickly with multiple applications open. 16GB: the recommended amount for comfortable everyday use. 32GB: for video editing, gaming, programming, or running virtual machines. 64GB and above: professional workloads only.
Can you add more RAM?
Many desktop computers allow RAM upgrades relatively easily — it is often the cheapest performance upgrade available. Some laptops allow RAM upgrades too, though many modern thin laptops have RAM soldered directly to the motherboard and cannot be upgraded. Check your specific model before purchasing RAM.
How to check your current RAM usage
On Windows, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and click the Performance tab, then Memory. On Mac, open Activity Monitor and check the Memory tab, paying attention to the Memory Pressure graph. Cerebro Scan shows RAM usage in real time on its Memory tab with a plain English interpretation of whether your current usage is healthy.
