How to Free Up Disk Space on Windows 10 and 11

March 2026·6 min read

Windows computers slow down dramatically when the hard drive is nearly full. Here is a systematic guide to finding what is taking up space and safely clearing it.

Run Disk Cleanup first

Windows has a built-in tool called Disk Cleanup. Search for it in the Start menu, select your C: drive and click OK. It calculates how much space can be freed from temporary files, downloaded programme files, recycling bin contents and more. Click Clean up system files for even more options.

Find large files and folders

Open File Explorer and navigate to This PC. Right-click the C: drive and select Properties, or use a free tool like WinDirStat to visualise exactly what is taking up space. You will often find old downloads, duplicate files, or large video files you had forgotten about.

Uninstall programmes you do not use

Go to Settings > Apps > Installed Apps and sort by size. You will almost certainly find several large programmes you have not used in months or years. Uninstalling them frees up space and also reduces the number of background processes running. Games are often the biggest space users.

Clear browser cache and downloads

Your web browser accumulates cached data over time. Chrome, Edge and Firefox all have built-in options to clear this with Ctrl+Shift+Delete. Also check your Downloads folder, which is often full of files you downloaded once and never need again.

Move files to external storage or cloud

Photos, videos and music are the biggest space consumers for most people. Moving them to an external hard drive or uploading them to OneDrive, Google Drive or iCloud frees up local storage while keeping your files accessible. Windows 10 and 11 have built-in OneDrive integration that can do this automatically.
