How Much Storage Do I Actually Need on My Computer?

March 2026·4 min read

Storage is one of those things people consistently get wrong — either buying far more than they need or not enough and regretting it within a year. Here is how to work out exactly what you need.

What actually takes up storage space

The biggest space consumers on most computers are: photos and videos, downloaded files, installed applications (especially games), music libraries, and system files. Documents and emails take up surprisingly little space. A typical Word document is around 50KB — you could fit 20,000 of them in 1GB.

How much space does Windows need?

A clean installation of Windows 11 takes around 25-30GB. With common applications like Office, Chrome, and an antivirus, you are looking at 50-70GB. Add your personal files and most people end up using 150-300GB for everyday computing. A 500GB SSD gives comfortable headroom for most people.

How much space does macOS need?

macOS itself requires around 15-20GB. With typical applications installed, expect 40-60GB for the system. Apple recommends at least 15% free space for smooth operation — on a 256GB Mac, that means keeping at least 38GB free. If you use your Mac for photos, a 512GB model or external storage is worth considering.

Photos and videos — the biggest wildcard

A single minute of 4K video from a modern phone is around 400MB. A year of casual photography might produce 10,000 photos at an average of 5MB each — that is 50GB. If you store media locally, this is the biggest variable in calculating your storage needs. Cloud storage or an external drive is essential for large photo and video collections.

Our recommendation

For most people: 512GB is the sweet spot — enough for everything with room to spare. For heavy media users or gamers: 1TB or more. For light users who keep files in the cloud: 256GB can work.
