Do You Actually Need More RAM? How to Check and What to Do

March 2026·6 min read

RAM (Random Access Memory) is one of the most impactful and cost-effective upgrades you can make to a slow computer. But not every slow computer needs more RAM — here is how to find out if yours does.

What RAM actually does

RAM is your computer's short-term memory. It holds the data that programmes are actively using so the processor can access it instantly. When RAM is full, the computer starts using your much-slower storage drive as overflow memory — and that is when everything grinds to a halt.

How to check if RAM is the problem

Open Task Manager on Windows or Activity Monitor on Mac and look at Memory usage. If you are regularly seeing 85% or more of your RAM in use during normal tasks, you are running low. Cerebro Scan shows this clearly on the Memory tab with real-time usage and a plain English interpretation.

How much RAM do you actually need?

For everyday use — web browsing, email, documents, video calls — 8GB is the minimum comfortable amount in 2026. 16GB gives you headroom for multiple applications. If you do video editing, gaming, or run virtual machines, 32GB or more may be beneficial.

Checking if your computer can be upgraded

Not all computers have upgradeable RAM. Many modern laptops have RAM soldered directly to the motherboard, meaning it cannot be changed. Mac computers with Apple Silicon chips have unified memory that cannot be upgraded after purchase. Before buying RAM, check your specific model's specifications.

Other things to try before upgrading

Before spending money on RAM, try these free fixes: close unused browser tabs, disable startup programmes you do not need, close applications running in the background, and restart your computer regularly. Sometimes what feels like a RAM problem is actually a memory leak in a specific application.
