Why Your Computer Slows Down Over Time (And How to Fix It)
Almost every computer slows down over time. It is not just your imagination — there are real, identifiable reasons why a computer that felt fast when you bought it can feel sluggish a few years later.
Software gets heavier over time
Every software update adds new features, better security, and more code. Windows 11 is significantly more demanding than Windows 7. Chrome uses far more RAM than it did five years ago. Meanwhile, your hardware stays the same. The gap between what software demands and what your hardware can deliver gradually widens.
Your hard drive fills up
When a storage drive gets close to capacity — typically below 15% free space — performance suffers dramatically. The operating system uses free space as virtual memory and for temporary files. When that space disappears, everything slows down. Deleting old files or upgrading to a larger drive solves this immediately.
Too many startup programmes accumulate
Every application you install wants to run at startup. Anti-virus software, cloud sync tools, communication apps, update managers — they all add to your startup time and consume memory in the background. After a few years, a computer can have dozens of programmes silently running that you never use.
Thermal throttling from dust buildup
Dust accumulates inside computers over time, blocking ventilation and causing the processor to overheat. Modern CPUs automatically reduce their speed when they get too hot — a process called thermal throttling. A computer that was fast when new can run at half speed simply because it is full of dust.
Hardware aging and wear
SSDs have a finite number of write cycles. RAM can develop faults. Hard drives develop bad sectors. Over time, these hardware components degrade. Modern operating systems are good at masking early hardware problems, which is why issues can be subtle at first before becoming obvious.
