Signs Your Computer Has a Virus or Malware

February 2026·5 min read

Modern malware is designed to be invisible. Unlike obvious viruses of the early internet era, today's malicious software hides and operates quietly. But there are still telltale signs.

Unexpected slowdowns with no clear cause

If your computer suddenly becomes significantly slower without any obvious reason — no new software, no full drive, no recent updates — malware is a possibility. Many types of malware run background processes that consume CPU and memory. If Task Manager shows high usage from a process you do not recognise, investigate it immediately.

Excessive network activity when idle

Some malware uses your computer to send spam, participate in attacks on other systems, or mine cryptocurrency. This uses your network connection constantly. If your router's activity light is flashing rapidly when you are not doing anything online, or your internet feels sluggish, check your network usage in Task Manager or Activity Monitor.

Browser redirects and unexpected adverts

If your browser takes you to unexpected websites, your homepage has changed without your doing, or you are seeing adverts in unusual places, this is a strong sign of adware or a browser hijacker. These are usually installed bundled with free software and are relatively easy to remove.

Security software has been disabled

Some sophisticated malware specifically targets and disables antivirus software to prevent detection. If Windows Defender shows as turned off and you did not turn it off, treat this as a serious warning sign and use a different device to download a removal tool.

What to do if you suspect malware

Download and run Malwarebytes free version — it is one of the most effective malware detection tools available. Run Windows Defender full scan as well. If malware is found and removed but problems persist, a complete Windows reinstall is sometimes the only way to be certain your system is clean. Always back up your important files first.
