Windows Updates — What They Are and Why You Should Not Skip Them

February 2026·4 min read

Windows updates are the most consistently ignored maintenance task on most computers. Here is what they actually do, why they matter, and the right way to manage them.

What Windows updates contain

Windows updates come in several types. Security updates patch vulnerabilities that attackers could exploit to take control of your computer or install malware. They are the most important type. Feature updates add new functionality. Driver updates improve how Windows works with your hardware. Cumulative updates bundle multiple fixes together.

What happens if you skip updates

Unpatched security vulnerabilities are one of the most common ways malware gets onto computers. The WannaCry ransomware attack in 2017 infected hundreds of thousands of computers worldwide — almost all of them were running Windows versions that had not installed an update that had been available for two months. Delaying updates significantly increases your risk.

How to check for and install updates

On Windows 10 and 11: go to Settings > Windows Update and click Check for Updates. Install everything available. If a restart is required, do it when convenient — do not postpone indefinitely. Updates are most disruptive if they install during shutdown or startup, which happens when you have been ignoring them for a long time.

How to manage updates sensibly

Enable automatic updates and let Windows install them in the background. Set active hours in Windows Update settings so restarts do not happen during work time. If you are concerned about a major update causing problems, waiting a week or two after release is reasonable — most serious bugs are identified quickly. But do not skip security updates.

Driver updates — handle separately

Windows Update sometimes installs driver updates that can cause problems. If a Windows Update causes an issue, you can roll back individual driver updates through Device Manager. For graphics drivers specifically, downloading directly from the manufacturer (Nvidia, AMD, Intel) gives you more control than relying on Windows Update.
