Are Browser Extensions Slowing Down Your Computer?

February 2026·4 min read

Browser extensions are one of the most overlooked causes of a slow computer. Most people have far more installed than they realise — and many of them are running code on every page you visit.

How extensions slow your browser

Every active browser extension runs JavaScript code on every web page you visit. A browser with 20 extensions will load pages noticeably slower than one with two or three. Some extensions are well-optimised and have minimal impact. Others are poorly written, constantly checking for updates, or secretly running background tasks that consume CPU and memory.

How to see which extensions you have

In Chrome: type chrome://extensions in the address bar. In Firefox: type about:addons. In Edge: type edge://extensions. You will likely find extensions you have completely forgotten about — installed years ago for a one-time task and never removed. Go through the list and remove anything you do not actively use.

How to identify which extension is causing problems

Open your browser in private or incognito mode — extensions are typically disabled in this mode. If your browser is noticeably faster in private mode, an extension is the cause. To find which one, disable all extensions and re-enable them one at a time, testing speed after each. The slow one will reveal itself.

Malicious and privacy-invasive extensions

Some browser extensions are specifically designed to track your browsing, inject adverts, or steal information. These are often installed bundled with free software downloads. Warning signs: extensions you do not remember installing, extensions that request access to all your data on all websites, and unexplained adverts appearing on normal websites.

How many extensions is too many?

There is no hard rule, but fewer is almost always better. Keep only extensions you use at least weekly. For most people, a password manager, an ad blocker, and perhaps one or two specific tools is all that is needed. If you find yourself with 10 or more extensions, a thorough review and clear-out will likely make a noticeable difference to browser speed.
