What Is Cache and Why Should You Clear It Regularly?

March 2026·4 min read

Cache files are created to speed things up by storing frequently-used data locally. But they can grow enormous and actually cause slowdowns. Here is what cache actually is and when to clear it.

What cache files are

Cache is a collection of temporary files your computer and applications store to speed up future operations. Your browser saves copies of web pages, images and scripts so they load faster on repeat visits. Applications save data locally to avoid downloading it again. Your operating system caches frequently-accessed files in memory for quick retrieval.

When cache helps and when it hurts

Fresh cache files genuinely speed things up. The problem comes when cache grows very large, becomes outdated, or gets corrupted. A browser cache of several gigabytes can paradoxically slow down page loading as it takes time to check the cache. Corrupted cache files can cause applications to behave oddly or crash.

How to clear browser cache

In Chrome, Edge, and Firefox: press Ctrl+Shift+Delete (or Cmd+Shift+Delete on Mac) to open the clear browsing data menu. Select Cached images and files and choose a time range — All time for a full clear. This will not log you out of websites if you leave Cookies unchecked. Do this monthly for best performance.

How to clear system cache on Windows

Search for Disk Cleanup in the Start menu, select your C: drive, and click OK. This clears temporary files, downloaded programme files, and other cached data. Running it monthly keeps temporary files under control. The Clean up system files option clears even more including old Windows installation files.

How to clear cache on Mac

macOS manages system cache automatically and clears it when needed. For application caches, you can navigate to ~/Library/Caches in Finder (hold Option and click Go to see Library) and delete folders for specific applications. Free applications like CleanMyMac can do this automatically, though the built-in macOS storage management in System Settings handles most cases adequately.
